What is the 3D figurine trend, and can you print one?

The 3D figurine trend is an image trend. People ask an AI image model for a picture of themselves as a collectible figurine on a desk, next to its box. Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, nicknamed nano banana, set it off on 26 August 2025. An earlier wave of action figure pictures started with OpenAI's 4o image generation on 25 March 2025.
The result is a picture. A printer needs a closed 3D shape, and nothing on it can be thinner than the printer can build. For the full-color resin our figurines are printed in, that means walls over 1 mm and details of at least 0.8 mm.
Since 1 July 2026, 96 in 100 pictures uploaded to Nendo reached a finished 3D model, and half were done in 5.1 minutes. The failures we see at the printer are thin parts, like glasses arms and shoelaces.
What the trend is
Both waves started with an image model. In April 2025, people used OpenAI's 4o image generation to make themselves into boxed action figures with accessories and job themed packaging. In September 2025, the figurine version took over after Google shipped Gemini 2.5 Flash Image on 26 August 2025 and called it nano banana in its own launch post.
Google later published the prompt people were using. It asks for a 1/7 scale commercialized figurine of the person in the picture, standing on a round transparent base on a desk, with the toy's box behind it. The result is a picture of a figurine. There is no 3D file behind it.
On Google Trends, worldwide searches for nano banana went from nothing in the first week of August 2025 to the highest point on the chart five weeks later. Today they sit at about a tenth of that peak. On the same chart, the April 2025 action figure wave peaked at 9 out of 100.

From a picture to a print file
A picture shows one side. Software that turns one photo into a 3D shape has to make up the side you can't see, and the researchers who build these models use the word hallucinate for it. A print file also has to be a closed surface. The 3MF format that full-color printing uses requires a continuous surface without holes, gaps or open edges.
Every part also needs real thickness. A drawn pair of glasses can be as thin as a line, and a printed pair has to survive cleaning and shipping. Our figurines are printed by JLC3DP in full-color resin, and the table below shows the limits it publishes. Protolabs, an independent manufacturer that uses the same kind of printing, publishes 0.76 mm as its thinnest free standing wall, which is close to JLC3DP's 1.0 mm.
So a real figurine takes a second step after the picture. Someone has to build a 3D model that is closed, thick enough everywhere, and inside the printer's size limits.

How often a picture becomes a printable model
Every Nendo figurine goes through this step, so we can measure it. Since 1 July 2026, 96 in 100 uploads reached a finished 3D model, measured on 455 runs. Half were ready in 5.1 minutes and 95 in 100 inside 10 minutes. The picture is redrawn in the Nendo style in about 104 seconds, and then the 3D model is built in about 176 seconds.
We build every figurine from the redrawn picture and never from the file you upload. The redrawn picture is made so the 3D step can build a front and a back that match. Most uploads that fail are pictures the AI image filter refuses. That was 3.2% of all uploads since 9 May 2026, and you find out in about 2 minutes.
Thickness is the problem that shows up later. None of the AI 3D generators we tested lets you set a minimum wall, and asking for it in the prompt didn't help. Four new tries on one model still came back with rims of 0.3 to 0.4 mm, and the printer needs 1.0 mm. In August 2026 the printer sent three of our orders back for this. The parts were glasses arms, a dog collar tag, and shoelaces and straps, and the thinnest measured 0.43 mm. We redrew those parts thicker and rebuilt the models. They came out at 1.42 to 1.53 mm and printed.

What AI answers say about this today
On 17 September 2026 we asked an OpenAI model with web search the same questions twice. Most answers had no sources, and the two runs didn't agree with each other.
One run said there is no reliable public failure rate for AI figurine services, and then gave a table of odds anyway. The second run gave different odds. The table below puts those answers next to what we measured.

What is the 3D figurine trend?
It is an image trend. You give an AI image model a photo and a prompt, and it returns a picture of you as a collectible figurine standing on a base, usually with a box behind it. It started with Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash Image on 26 August 2025, after an earlier action figure version in April 2025.
Can ChatGPT or Gemini make a 3D printable file?
No. Both return an image file. A printer needs a closed 3D shape with real thickness, and making that 3D model is a separate step.
How do I turn the AI figurine picture into a real figurine?
You need a 3D model first. An AI 3D generator, a 3D artist or a figurine service can make one from your photo, and then a full-color printer can print it. Start from the original photo or drawing, because it has more detail than the AI picture. On Nendo this takes about 5 minutes to a model you can spin and about 7 minutes to a real print price.
Why do thin parts fail?
Full-color resin needs walls of about 1.0 mm and details of 0.8 mm. Anything thinner breaks or can't be built. Glasses arms, straps and collar tags are the parts that fail most often. In August 2026 three of our orders came back for this, and the thinnest part measured 0.43 mm.
Does the figurine look like the photo?
The front is built from your photo. The back is always made up by the model, because one photo can't show it. At Nendo you see the redrawn picture and the 3D model before anything is printed, and you can change them.
What photo works best?
One clear, well lit subject facing the camera, with the head and feet inside the frame. A busy background is fine on Nendo, because the picture gets redrawn. If the AI image filter refuses a picture, you find out in about 2 minutes and can try another one.
How much does it cost to print one?
At the eight shops we checked on 17 September 2026, a figurine made from a photo cost $58 to $219. A Nendo figurine costs $29 to $30, with $5 shipping on most orders. Our cost article has the price at each shop by size.
How long until it arrives?
Most shops publish 2 to 5 weeks. Our own orders took a median of 17.4 calendar days from checkout to the door, measured on 33 delivered orders placed between 27 May and 26 August 2026. Nine in ten arrived inside 22 days.
